13 Days Big Game Wildlife

Day 1: Arrive Nairobi
On arrival transfer to the hotel
Overnight at Sarova Stanley Hotel

Day 2: Nairobi
Today we’ll visit the Nairobi Museum famously, known for the prehistory engraved along the Rift valley in East Africa. A well guided museum tour will bring us across the stories of the “Turkana Boy” in Kenya, “Lucy” (our Mother) in Ethiopia and the “Nut Cracker” in Tanzania. Geological gallery complements the dating of these creatures. Other galleries of great human interest includes the Ethnography portraying the over 42 ethnic tribes in Kenya, birds and mammals galleries gives us the insight of the coming trip

Day 3: Mt. Kenya
After breakfast will head for Mt Kenya passing the central highlands comprising of the small scale farms and large tracks of pineapple and coffee plantation. Arrive at our lodge for lunch located at the slopes of Mt Kenya at 2190m. Well placed in a forested area next to a waterhole that attracts lots of mammals at night. Some that me be seen includes Leopard, Giant Forest Hog, Bush Pig, Large-spotted Genet among others, while the armed guided forest walk takes you even more nearer to the wild. The flush red and calls of the Hartlaub’s Turaco is great while the Black-and-White Columbus, Syke’s Monkey, Olive Baboon, Cape Bufallo, Elephants may be encountered.

Day 4-7: Samburu National Reserve
After morning walk and breakfast we’ll cross the open plains between the Mt. Kenya and Aberdare Ranges where stunning Long-tailed Widowbird in their breeding plumages excites each and every participant. Arriving at Samburu Serena Lodge for lunch. We’ll spend the next 3 nights here and game drive should take us through the three famous national reserves namely Samburu, Bufallo Springs and Shaba (George and Joy Adamson did live here) . Big Game here her includes species well restricted to the arid conditions some north of equator such as Gravy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk among large herds of Elephants, Impalas, Grant’s and Thompson’s Gazelles. Vulturine Guineafowl is a species we hope not to miss. The Samburu tribe (closely resembling and sharing the Maa language with Masai) inhabits the area and a visit to their homestead is a treat to remember.

Day 7-9: Lake Nakuru National Park
Today we transfer across the Solio Plains visiting the Thompson’s Fall and later descending to the Great Rift Valley via the Subukia Escarpment and along the dormant Menengai Crater to reach the world famous Lake Nakuru National Park on time for lunch. Usually there is a high concentration of both Lesser and Greater Flamingoes and makes another unforgettable sighting.

The park host great variety of mammals including the Lion, Leopard, Black and White Rhinos, large herds of Cape Buffalo, Common Waterbuck among other herbivores and if luck a new behavior of Spotted Hyenas killing the flamingoes. The lodge where we stay id located in the hills probably holding the largest euphorbia forest in the world.

Day 9: Lake Naivasha
We’ll spend a whole day at Naivasha where a boat ride and a walk in the nearby Hell’s Gate National Park makes great walking expedition through the herds of Common Zebra, Warthogs, Grant’s and Thompson’s Gazelles and occasionally Bufallo.
Staying at the famous house of George and Joy Adamson where tea/coffee and cookies while watching one of the famous documentaries “Born Free, Living Free or Elsa the Lioness” is a MUST for all.

Day 10-13: Masai Mara National Reserve
After an early morning breakfast we’ll head to our final destination the 8th wonder of the world Masai Mara National Reserve where we’ll spend our next 3 nights in the far western part of the reserve and on the Olololoo Escarpment and near to the bank of the Mara River in a luxurious first class tented camp.
In the camp’s forest a flock of both the Shalow’s and Ross’ Turaco may appear and herds of large mammals may be well visible from the dinning area. During the famous Wilderbeest migration the big herds fills the area and you may frequently encounter large cats such as Lions, Hyenas and Cheetah.
Here we may also opt to take a bird’s eye view balloon flight over the plains and wildlife of Masai Mara.

Overnight at Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp

Day 13: Fly Masai Mara – Nairobi
We take a morning game drive and after breakfast fly back to Nairobi with lunch at the Giraffe Manor with giraffes later visiting the Giraffe Centre.

A.
It is better to book as far in advance as possible to ensure availability at the time you wish to travel (4-6 months) or even one year , especially during the high / peak season –June - October and during Christmas and New Year season.
